Yoga means "UNION." What does it mean? What kind of union?
The meaning of yoga, in modern times, is not the same it had in its origin. Obviously its objective was different too. In the beginning it was only one yoga, in other words, people practicing yoga were practicing all the yogas. A yogi knew all of them and he/she was practicing each one. Mastering all the yogas was not a simple task and it was a lifetime achieving.
When time passes by the original meaning of yoga was lost. Now people just say: "yoga means union."
Explaining yoga in modern terms is not easy because we have now a very different way to think and ...
Briefly we can point again the problems to understand the original yoga:
- Our modern way to think.
- Modern languages are different than the old ones.
- The translations change meanings, sometimes not too much and sometimes too much.
- The original yogis were Masters.
Understanding yoga takes many years of study and practice. It requires a real commitment, practically you have to surrender your life to it. All the problems of modern societies (Stress, violence, intolerance, frustration, fantasies, traumas, economy, worries, etc.) do not let people to follow the principle of the original yoga. Well, I am talking in general, there are some people with a real good heart who try their best to do so. But again, where are the Masters? some yogis tell you they are Masters, but the real ones will not tell you that. THE TAO WHO YOU SPEAK IS NOT THE REAL TAO (The Tao Te Ching, Daodejing or Dao De Jing).
If you ask: "What does that book have to do with yoga?" Then I know you do not know what yoga is.
Yoga is not just asanas, it is a science and a philosophy and meditation is the heart of yoga.
THE REAL OBJECTIVE OF YOGA IS TO UNIFY YOURSELF WITH THE MOST INNER SELF: ATMAN. Yoga is not mere exercises to improve your health. It is rather the most amazing way to connect yourself with the divine within yourself. Yoga is a spiritual way beyond religion. It shows us how to live in harmony, in peace in the midst of a chaotic world.
There is only one yoga, but there are several tools to empower this connection with the Supreme.THE TRUE NATURE OF ALL LIVING CREATURES IS WAY FAR FROM THE PHYSICAL WORLD.
All great Masters around the world practiced yoga in one way or another. All of them payed special interest to meditation as the most important tool to make this connection with the innermost superior being.
Yoga was known by all ancient cultures. There are several ancient pieces revealing this truth. Archeological pieces of yoga are among the Olmecs, for example. Ancient statues of people doing meditation were found in Mexico and in Central America as well as in Peru.. Huehueteotl, the god of fire of the Aztecs, is seated on a meditation position, just for instance.
Yoga does not belong to a country or region. It is universal. Yoga goes far beyond from any frontier. Pantajali did not invent Yoga, but he organized in such a smart way. He was a real Master and we know it because of his intelligence and because of the way he is represented: As a serpent like person. Serpent was the symbol of wisdom in ancient cultures.
IS YOGA FOR MASTERS ONLY?
Of course not. Yoga is for every person of all ages beyond beliefs, race, etc.
We all have the right to practice yoga and to achieve spiritual development. You decide how far you want to go. Yes, you can take yoga just to have a better health, strength and flexibility; but yoga can take you far beyond that.
