IS YOGA A RELIGION?
Yoga is a science and a philosophy. Its science has exercises to develop your body and mind. Its philosophy teaches principles to live in peace and harmony.
Yoga is not a religion, but a spiritual path to self-freedom, self- enlightenment, self-joy and self-love. This is not in a selfish way; but base on the idea that the divine is within all beings. Beliefs, for a yogi, are not important; but studying…
The path is not within a church, but in the interior world of the yogi. Nevertheless, yoga teaches to respect all beliefs and that includes respect for non-believers, even if they are skeptics or atheists.
A yogi does not wait for a change coming from the exterior world, but for his/her own change in his/her body, emotions and mind.
Yoga makes us to understand the need for a huge change that has to come from inside and not from outside!
THE WHOLE WORLD NEEDS A CHANGE!
People do not know how to live in peace and harmony. People do not know how to love others and how to be happy with whatever they have. People do not understand life because they are blind. The root of their blindness is selfishness. The worst part is that people do not want to accept a different path or style of life. They suffer they complain, they cry; but they do not want to change.
Regular people wait for others to change: A person wants his/her spouse to change and this causes fights between both, people want the government to change, students want another teacher, employees want a different boss, etc.
If the life we have does not make us happy then we have to be willing to change. If we want a different world we have to build it. It will not emerge randomly. It will come from us and for us!
Yoga teaches us principles of unity, compassion, collaboration, understanding, love, etc. All those are spiritual principles beyond any religion. They are ideas to guide us to build a better society made by humans with good hearts and peace lovers.
The first step is to promote all those ideas, later the change will come slowly. Remember: We think first then we act. So, ideas come first then action. Let all those ideas to go around and eventually actions will follow.
If we want a world with peace, harmony and love then we have to work accordingly. The change starts within all us. How could we be happy if we continue on the same path of violence and destruction?
Ideas created the world where we live in. So, new ideas can build another type of society with different values based on love and compassion.
Happiness will never come to us if we persist on living the same way we live. Happiness will never come from outside, but from within. Why?
HAPPINESS AND THE INNER WORLD.
The great philosopher Immanuel Kant pointed out that the exterior is the reflection of the interior. The question then is: What is in our inner world? Did we ever think of that? Usually we take it for granted and we think we know ourselves; but the whole idea of learning to meditate is to study the inner world. That what is called TRUTH is right inside of you and meditation is the technique to grab that truth.
Meditation takes you slowly into the inner world to discover the root of your thoughts and emotions. Meditation is the technique to grab SELF-KNOWLEDGE. All sages from the East and from the West got their wisdom from their own inner world.
How could you ever be happy if you do not know why you are not happy? How could you ever be happy if you do not find the root of your thoughts and emotions? Without that special knowledge (Jnana Yoga) happiness is far from us.
Socrates, the great philosopher, stated that it was only one good thing: Knowledge, and only one evil thing: Ignorance. He was talking about the knowledge of ourselves.
The inner world is a mystery for a regular human being because he/she is too busy thinking of his/her job, problems, rent, beauty, projects, memories, etc. No wonder why the great Master from the Gospels said: “Let the dead ones to bury the dead ones.” As a coincidence, it is said that Krishna went to some place and when he returned he found everyone dead. Well, they were not physically dead, but spiritually dead.
All ancient philosophies point out the inner world as the source of real happiness, peace and freedom. Whoever looks for them outside is mistaken. Atman is the source of all that!
It is interesting that all cultures, religions, and philosophies said that the path is inside and people look for everything outside. They say that the divine principle is within us, but they look for it outside! All the wisdom, all the power, all you need is within you. Atman is all you need; he is the source of all blessings.
Happiness will never come to a selfish person; but to the one who develops love for all beings because all creatures are the dwelling of Atman. This is why praying should go inside and not outside.
The Greek philosophers used to say: “If you do not find the treasures and jewels you have inside then, how can you find them outside?”
SPIRITUALITY AND HAPPINESS ARE WITHIN US!
Now is the time when we have to make a “U” turn because everything we need is in our own interior world. It is there just waiting for us to be discovered. No, the idea is not to follow what others say, but to find it by our own means and effort.
It is ok to go to a church, but… how good is it to hear about love and be selfish? Love and selfishness are not compatible because love is a force that needs expression. Love goes from inside to outside. Selfishness goes in the opposite direction.
Love is happiness, love is spirituality, love is everything we need; but it is inside. Love and happiness do not depend on another person or thing.
Yes, there are tough days and life is hard. Nevertheless, the strength you need is within you. Inside you have real faith, but it might be deep down in your interior world. You have to dig to get all the treasures you have inside.
Spirituality is not a theory; it is not a dogma; it is not an idea or belief. Spirituality is your attitude toward life and other beings. It is what you do for you and others. Spirituality is action beyond beliefs!
Someone might be skeptic or atheist; but he might have some kind of spirituality that he/she puts in action when helping other beings.
Spirituality is an expression of love. It has nothing to do with race, age, country, language, skin color or any human limitation.
Whoever wants to be happy should release his/her own spirituality and share it with everyone. What is the value of a religious person who feels hatred for another person or race? How could be mixed love and violence, spirituality and wrong doing? It does not matter how many days a person goes to church if he/she does not practice love, comprehension, compassion, peace, tolerance, altruism, charity, etc.
Spirituality is the key to happiness because Atman is inside and he is the source of everything we need! How can we develop spirituality? Please check link below.
